Big Government is Tyrannical

28May2010
As government grows, liberty recedes.

Government first grows through its laws, only later are agencies charged with upholding them established. With each law that goes beyond the basic function of protecting the rights of the individual, our government gains a little more leverage over otherwise innocent men, and liberty recedes.

Did you ever stop to think why the Unites States has the most incarcerated individuals per capita of any first world nation? Why our penal system is clogged with people who have committed victimless crimes; crimes which do not violate the right of any individual, but only the authority of the state.

The history of Big Government is a tableau of horrors. Hitler, Stalin, Mao...everything they did was legal by the laws of their land.

It can and will happen here, unless we stop it.

Big Government is Unsustainable

Rational self interest causes individuals to make careful decisions about how best to use their resources to obtain maximum benefit from them.

They carefully examine their options, but if they’re mistaken in their decision, they can reallocate their resources toward more desirable results.

Because our economy is nothing more than millions of individual decision making processes about how best to allocate resources, the more freedom a people have to make such decisions, the more efficiently those resources will be allocated.

The more prosperous the nation will be.

But through programs of taxation and redistribution, Big Government attempts to centralize economic planning. This diverts resources from individuals making decisions through economic means, people who have a vested interest in being right or wrong, to bureaucrats making decisions through political means and who aren’t particularly affected either way.

They promise prosperity for everyone with out any real effort on the part of anyone, so long as we march off to work to put in our 30 hours, then endorse our paycheck over to the government at the end of the week and keep our mouths shut.

Of course, bureaucratic management can never compete with the free market in solving problems. So central economic planning doesn't work. As a result government is inherently wasteful, and the larger it grows and spends, the more it wastes. Examples of Big Government waste and incompetence are so numerous, that I won’t even begin to waste your time with them.

We’ve come to a place in our history where a bloated public sector and massive deficit spending are simply unsustainable. Our national debt has exceeded $13 trillion dollars, federal spending is 25% of GDP. Include all level of government, and you’ll find that more than half of all our economic output is directed not by stakeholders, but the political process.

If there’s one thing the failed Socialists experiments of the 20th century and the recent instability of European societies have taught us, it's that no economy can survive this for long.

Big Government is Amoral

The most important foundation of morality is to reject initiation of force.

We may not use force or coercion on any individual or group, unless through their actions they have violated the rights of another individual or group.

Ours is a nation founded upon the rule of law. If people wish to accomplish things they must set out to use peaceful means. It is not the place of government to make people act in a moral fashion. Government may only restrain individuals from injuring one another, leaving them otherwise free act in the marketplace.

Big Government undermines this most basic precept.

It’s leaders campaign by promising to enacts laws and regulations that take from some people and give to others through force. It encourages the use of politics to achieve one’s objectives, and in doing so legitimizes force as a means of persuasion. People who would never resort to holding their neighbors up at gunpoint, come to believe that it moral for government to do anything, so long as it’s done democratically.

Once that moral line is crossed, any atrocity can be justified through the will of the people.

I've seen a surge in anti-libertarian sentiment among the leftist establishment recently.

Progressives believe it is the purpose of government to grow as large, and offer as many services as it possibly can. They believe the faster that critical mass of size and scope is achieved, the better off everyone will be. They'd have us march off to work, put in our 30 hours, then endorse our paycheck over to the government at the end of the week without a care in the world. Prosperity for all without any real effort on the part of anyone.

Anybody who impedes expansion, or dares to point out why it won't work is to be isolated and attacked. The public is so fed up, their bullshit filter so finely attuned to what the left is shoveling, that the harder they push the more likely they are to drive sentiment in the opposite fashion. Their every slur is like a testament to the effectiveness of our message.

We have the intellectual firepower, and everything to gain.

Let them attack.

Libertarianism is the most mis-characterized and slandered political movement in American history. How self described rational people could position themselves in opposition to freedom, is beyond me.

But they do.

So let's take a journey of the imagination, and begin to set the record straight. Let your eyes close, not all the way, you still need to read.

Imagine a country where a free market economy creates prosperity, giving people a chance at social mobility through personal achievement.

Imagine an country where wealthy corporations aren't being propped up by tax dollars, and compete without government aid or interference.

Imagine a country where law enforcement officials are on duty to protect you, instead of wasting time dealing with victimless crimes.

Imagine a country where law enforcement officials are on duty to protect you, instead of wasting time dealing with victimless crimes.

Imagine a country where tolerance is a way of life, and where no group receives preferential treatment from the government.

Imagine a country where the government cannot dictate your lifestyle or interests, and respects your right to your own property.

Imagine a country where government performs a few basic functions, and the majority of power resides with private citizens.

Now imagine that country was America, and that there was a political party whose values could make it all reality.

That party is the Libertarian Party.

All it needs to succeed is for you to stop imagining, and give your support.

President Obama gave the commencement speech this weekend at Hampton University in Virginia, and showed us once again that when Big O goes off teleprompter and starts to ad lib, his inner tyrant shows through.

"Meanwhile, you're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't rank all that high on the truth meter. With iPods and iPads; Xboxes and PlayStations; information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment. All of this is not only putting new pressures on you; it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy."

What happened to the tech-savvy Obama whose campaign dominated social media in its run for the White House? Or his ever present Blackberry? Funny how if the information is disseminated from him it's empowering, but disagree or contradict him, it's a distraction.

What he's really saying here is that our culture's access to information stands in the way his regime's ambitions to increase it's already massive power base, and that controlling the flow of information is the first step to controlling dissent. Shut down dissent, and his Socialist Mob-acracy falls right into place.

You can have my Hero when you pry it from my cold, dead hands, Barry.

Mob-acracy

Let me be blunt...populism is bullshit.

A majority is no proof of justice, no proof of being right, it's only proof of being a majority. Our nation was founded on protecting the (political) minority colonists, from the majority British.

When the majority is allowed to infringe upon the rights of minority, with the thought of promoting the welfare of the majority, society degenerates into a permanent conspiracy on the part of one group to fleece and enslave another. It's the corruption of the majority in this nation to victimize the minority economically affluent that seeks to make thugs of us all.

The rights of the individual are unalienable, no majority has a right to deprive the individual of them; so the majority must self-impose restraint as a whole people upon a majority of them through the rule of law, to securing sober action and a respect for the rights of the minority.

The united States Constitution is the embodiment of that self restraint.

Obey it.
