Bitch, Please

The Democratic majority is running on fumes.
Thursday's televised health care dog and pony show failed to produce the hoped for backlash of public sentiment against Republicans blocking of the President's health care agenda.
Following the summit House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made it clear that they plan to push forward:
"Lawmakers sometimes must enact policies that, even if unpopular at the moment, will help the public..." Her meaning was clear:
Democratic lawmakers are to fall on their sword for their President.
Reconciliation is the only way forward, and Pelosi reiterated today in an interview released by ABC news.
"We're not here just to self-perpetuate our service in Congress," she said. "We're here to do the job for the American people."
She dismisses the notion that the American people are against her, once again attacking Tea Party voters as the "AstroTurf" movement, that's been hijacked by the GOP and Health Insurer lobby.
Really, Nancy? Are we back to that?
While I admit that I have feared that the Tea Party movement would be co-opted by Republicans, I don't believe that's happened yet. If anything, the reverse is becoming true. Republican candidates at all levels have had their "come to Jesus" moments with the Tea Parties, and are being made to listen to what America wants.
Of course the idea that Tea Parties are somehow being funded or organized from the outside is ludicrous. I wonder if those on the left have taken time to actually, I don't know, attend a protest event? The disorganized gatherings of concerned people taking time off of work, and expending their hard earned money to be there, don't exactly smack of hard core activists.
The left, on the other hand, has made a profession of activism. A cursory and unscientific survey of the top five job site on Google, for the title "Activist", yielded 42 open positions for activists with left wing organizations. The Ladders, a job search website that specializes in jobs paying $100K+ per year, had 8 openings. Pulling down 100 large a year doesn't sound very "grassroots" to me.
I even came across an advertisement on Craigslist for a company that organizes so called grassroots campaigns for you. Notice the front page quote from Barack Obama, and the prominently displayed "jobs" link. Their client list reads like a who's who of left wing political organizations in America:
It goes on.
The truth is that the American people are genuinely against this bill, and that no one who has had as much plastic surgery as Nancy Pelosi, has any business talking about what's real and what's fake.

The President and his chosen few Democrats meet today with Republicans under the guise of bipartisanship, all the while making ready to pass Obamacare in the senate with a 51 vote plus Biden reconciliation.
Today's summit is nothing more than due diligence, an attempt to paint the GOP in an obstructionist light, and cover Democrats against public backlash.
Which will fail of course.
*Edit: Feed removed after the event's conclusion.*
None the less, for your enjoyment, a 6 hour live stream of Obamacare theatre!

Talking About My Generation
18Feb2010
I was born on the cusp of Generation X, I am a Millennial.
Born between 1978 and 2000, Millennials are the largest generation in American history, outnumbering even the baby boomers by nearly 17 million.
Ours is the information age. We grew up with the Internet, and 24/7 cable news. The unprecedented access to technology and information has created a potential for the most socially and politically engaged generation to date.
To what end?
A new movement called Generation WE, loosely based around the book of the same name by Eric Cooper, purports to tell the tale.
Their aim is nothing less than sweeping change of America and the world as a whole. The movement claims to be post-ideological, post-partisan, and post-political; it’s pretty clear that isn’t true. Generation WE is a progressive movement, both politically and ideologically.
Which isn't really surprising. Mine is the generation that elected (with a few allies) Barack Obama. I am a rare exception.
Generation WE appeals to the innate sense of entitlement present in most of my generation, a desire to stick it to their parents for not giving them every piece of crap they pestered them for. “ We’re bigger than you, now you’ll do things our way!” Twisted, but it’s good marketing. Their video is compelling, and well produced. Their website boasts quotes from the likes of Harry Reid and Arianna Huffington, who sound in awe of the energy. There’s an air of something new and exciting on the horizon.
But there’s nothing new about progressives. It’s the same old garbage, with a pretty new wrapper. The last hold outs of the Silent Generation lead the resurrection and re-branding of failed and discredited Socialist policies of the 20th century. Now Millennials are eating it up.
As one of the oldest of the Millennials I feel a certain responsibility. I want you all to know that there’s a better way. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past. We are fighting for the future of this country, and the soul of our generation. The best way to take care of other people is to ensure nobody has to take care of you. It’s okay to be successful, and to keep what’s yours. Nothing is more precious than your liberties.

The Black Narcissus
10Feb10
Even as his approval ratings plunge into the 40's, the arrogance of Barack Obama has yet to find its limit.
Perhaps he feels justified.
At the beginning of the Obama Presidency, the Democratic super majority came hard out of the gate. They set immediately to work spending taxpayer money and growing the debt to solidify their hold. They've expanded the scope and powers of government beyond anything previously seen on American soil, and advancing the progressive agenda by decades, putting a framework in place for something big to come.
But thus far, President Obama has failed to see his signature domestic policies become reality. Aided by a few watchdogs, the American electorate has awakened into something fierce and terrible. We've seen the emptiness of a politicians words, and seen the threat posed to our very way of life. Exercising our natural right of defense we seized up the only weapon at our disposal, a broken Republican party. With us behind them, they've momentarily found their spines, and with us fought the "Bolshevik Plot" to a standstill.
Though on his heels, Barry O's lost none of his swagger. He's dismissed us as beneath his response, and called Republican's resistance simple 'obstinacy,'. He's calling for "bipartisanship". But in his tone I hear:
Do it my way...or else.
His threats are empty. A sign of weakness. Democrats have squandered their advantage, and with mid-terms fast approaching, Obama is at risk of becoming a lame duck president.
The time for compromise is through. Give no quarter.

Liberty on the Rocks

A little html debugging and after a week, I can post again.
I've been a Libertarian for several years, but only in the last year or so really started to follow politics.
In September of last year, President Obama made a now famous speech on health care in which he laid out his reform agenda before a joint session of congress. After watching the speech, I was outraged, but I didn't really know what to do about it.
The next day I was driving to work, listening to Morning Edition on NPR when a report came on with correspondent Jeff Brady, getting viewer reactions to the speech. He talked to a group of Libertarians that meet every other Wednesday at an Irish pub in Denver, that called themselves Liberty on the Rocks.
All I could think was, "Libertarians...meeting...at a bar?" I was instantly struck by the idea. As soon as I got to work, I excitedly emailed my wife to tell her about the group. After a few minutes of reading about it online, I knew I wanted to start a chapter in Des Moines.
Which is how I got started into political activism.
Liberty on the Rocks is equal parts grassroots movement, cocktail hour, and informative conversation. There's now more 15 chapters coast to coast, and even an international chapter in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Though a lot of the members are Libertarians, one certainly doesn't have to be to attend. Anyone who believes in the groups core concept of Free Markets, Individual Rights and Limited Government is welcome to attend.
We meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 5:30 to 7 pm, at the Ducktail Lounge 1809 Northwest 86th Street Clive, Iowa.
At the next meeting on February 17th, Des Moines Liberty on the Rocks will be hosting Republican candidate for Iowa's 3rd Congressional District, Dave Funk.
Come out, meet Dave, and a lot of people who want to see this country put back on track.
