Liberty on the Rocks

06Feb10
A little html debugging and after a week, I can post again.

I've been a Libertarian for several years, but only in the last year or so really started to follow politics.

In September of last year, President Obama made a now famous speech on health care in which he laid out his reform agenda before a joint session of congress. After watching the speech, I was outraged, but I didn't really know what to do about it.

The next day I was driving to work, listening to Morning Edition on NPR when a report came on with correspondent Jeff Brady, getting viewer reactions to the speech. He talked to a group of Libertarians that meet every other Wednesday at an Irish pub in Denver, that called themselves Liberty on the Rocks.

All I could think was, "Libertarians...meeting...at a bar?" I was instantly struck by the idea. As soon as I got to work, I excitedly emailed my wife to tell her about the group. After a few minutes of reading about it online, I knew I wanted to start a chapter in Des Moines.

Which is how I got started into political activism.

Liberty on the Rocks is equal parts grassroots movement, cocktail hour, and informative conversation. There's now more 15 chapters coast to coast, and even an international chapter in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Though a lot of the members are Libertarians, one certainly doesn't have to be to attend. Anyone who believes in the groups core concept of Free Markets, Individual Rights and Limited Government is welcome to attend.

We meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 5:30 to 7 pm, at the Ducktail Lounge 1809 Northwest 86th Street Clive, Iowa.

At the next meeting on February 17th, Des Moines Liberty on the Rocks will be hosting Republican candidate for Iowa's 3rd Congressional District, Dave Funk.

Come out, meet Dave, and a lot of people who want to see this country put back on track.
